Fun Facts:
· "Saint Lucia County" was created in 1844: it was renamed Brevard County in 1855 after George Washington Brevard: who served as Florida State Controller from 1854 to 1860.
· Native Americans are believed to have lived here as far back as 10,000 B.C.
· It is on the beaches of Brevard, that Ponce De Leon is thought to have landed in Florida.
· Brevard is home to Kennedy Space Center.
· The County is also home to the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge.
· The area code for the entire county was made "321" in 1999: as in the "3...2...1... Blast Off!" countdown sequence.
· The total number of on-site Kennedy Space Center workers was nearly 14,000, which 99% of lived in Central Florida counties. (Central Florida Regional Indicators Report 2005, Pg 11)
2009 Regional Progress Report - Brevard County Facts:
· Personal income of Brevard County residents increased 8% between 2000 and 2006.
· Brevard County led the region with 30% of all adults volunteering in some capacity.
· Brevard County had the highest percentage of voter turnout in the region in the 2008 election with 83% of registered voters casting ballots.
